Differential treatment to candidates in Congress presidential polls, says Tharoor_我的网站

一 |     Dhaka, Oct 19 (UNI) Kuki Chin National Front (KNF), a newly emerging armed group in the country’s mountainous areas, has claimed no affiliation with the militants.

A leader of the organization said that they were forced to retreat in the face of combing operations by the joint forces, thinking about the loss of local people.

The KNF said this in a video message sent from an undisclosed location in remote hill on Wednesday (October 19) afternoon.

In the three-minute long video message, a leader of the group wearing a black mask was seen speaking with two of their armed members behind him. However, it is not known whether the leader wearing a mask is the president of the organization, Nathan Baum.

The leader said that the KNF was forced to retreat in the face of the armed forces' operation in the hills on the orders of the high-level leaders of the organization.

The KNF issued the video message at a time when army and RAB-led combing operation is going on across Chittagong Hill districts--Rangamati, Bandarban and other areas bordering Myanmar. This is the biggest anti-terror operation in Chittagong Hill Tracts in recent times.

In the video message, the leader said that Jano Sanghati Samiti-led by Santu Larma-tactfully instigated the security forces to launch this operation against KNF by bringing allegation of their involvement in militancy. Basically, KNF is a quiet organization.

The leader of the organization alleged that Jano Sanghati Samiti (JSS) is mainly creating unrest in the hills. They killed many ethnic groups including Bengalis in the area. JSS has been creating turmoil in the mountains, he said.

Blaming JSS leader Santu Larma for not completing the Peace Agreement, the leader said in the video message that the members of the organization, led by Santu Larma, have surrendered very few weapons. Rather, they are the ones who have launched armed attacks on the army and are blaming the KNF for it. After that attack, the joint forces started a combing operation against the KNF in the hills.

They claimed that some of Bom ethnic group were harassed during the operation.

Meanwhile, operations by joint forces are continuing in the vast areas of Raikxyong Valley, including the foothills of Shippi hill, Saizam Para, Ronin Para, Keukradong hill, adjacent to Ruma and Rowanchhari upazilas of Bandarban.

Due to the fear that unpleasant incidents may happen to tourists as a result of this operation, the travel of tourists in Ruma and Rowangchari upazilas of Bandarban has been stopped for the time being.

In a press briefing by RAB, the director of its media wing told reporters that several evidences of the activities of extremist organizations were found in the hills.

However, he did not say that the extremists are affiliated with any armed organization in the hilly region.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP also indicated at differential treatment between him and Mallikarjun Kharge, who is being seen as the choice or the party leadership. Congress has maintained the party is not backing any candidate officially.

Addressing a press conference here, Tharoor said while he is not pointing fingers at Central Election Authority Chairman Madhusudan Mistry, there are flaws in the system.

"I am not saying anything against Mr. Mistry, there are some flaws in the systems which we all know. There have not been elections for 22 years..." said Tharoor.

He said there were discrepancies in the lists of voters provided.

"One list was given earlier, another list was given on Wednesday.... Some names were different in the lists, for some names, there was no phone number," he said.

"I am not saying it's being done intentionally. There have not been elections in our party for a long time. So there are issues. I know Mr. Mistry and his team are trying to hold free and fair elections. We are not complaining against them but there ar problems with the system," he said.

"That is why I used open mediums to take my message across. I am not sure I will be able to reach everyone before 17th."

He also pointed at differential treatment to candidates.

"Another issue is what some leaders did, that is why I said there is no level playing field. At a lot of places, big leaders, PCC chiefs welcome Kharge ji, call people for meetings. This happened for only one candidate, not for me," he said.

"Many times when I went to some PCC, the PCC chief became busy on the day...I am not complaining, but do you not see a difference in treatment?"

Election will be held on October 17, counting will be held on October 19 and results will be declared.
